Dear All  – it would be great if you were able to join us for the charity Coffee Morning on Wednesday of next week – even if you were able to pop in briefly!

There will be a stall for sweet and savoury items and also paperbacks.  We will not be having other stalls so the hall will not be so crowded.

Items for the bakery stall will be most welcome!

It would be lovely to have your support!

Ride + Stride Saturday 11th September 2021

Kent Ride and Stride Logo

Ride & Stride is the sponsored bike ride or walk in which people all over England walk or cycle between churches, exploring and enjoying the countryside from Cornwall to Northumberland. The money they raise helps to save historic churches, chapels and meeting houses for future generations by helping to fund urgent repairs and the installation of modern facilities.

The next Ride and Stride will take place on 11 September 2021, from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm, and you can be part of it. Participants plan their own routes, and seek sponsorship for riding, cycling, walking, or manning the church. After the event the money is collected and divided between churches in need of repair, by your own choice and by the Friends of Kent Churches, the area organiser. More information and forms you will find on https://www.kentrideandstride.co.uk/ .

Christian Aid Week

Normally this week many of us would be getting ready for our house to house collection of Christian Aid Week. St Stephen’s usually raises around £2000 through this – a significant some for those in poor countries living on a few pounds a week.

This year we cannot do that but instead we have set up a “Just Giving” page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ststephenschristianaid2020 so that all of us, whether we normally collect for Christian Aid or not, can both to make a donation and also encourage our friends and neighbours to contribute.

Some people usually raise money through activities – cake sales, coffee mornings etc. Instead of (or as well as) asking people for donations why not be imaginative and create some online fund raising activities people can take part in? There are ideas and more information on
https://www.christianaid.org.uk/news/coronavirus-guidance-christian-aid-week-events-and-activities

Please help to make sure we don’t let those who rely on Christian Aid down in this year when they too face the problems of Covid-19 but without the NHS and our comfortable houses to help us ride it out. Start planning NOW what you are going to do this week Christian Aid week. Why not post your ideas on the St Stephen’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ststephenscanterbury/ ?

Choir Open Morning

Monday 17th February 10.00–11.30am
St Stephen’s Church, Hales Drive, Canterbury, CT2 7AB

Are you between 7 and 11 years old?

Do you enjoy singing and making music?

Come along to St Stephen’s Church for a fun morning of singing on the Monday of half-term, and see what it would be like to be a chorister.

Information for your parents or carers…

St Stephen’s is well-known for it’s choir throughout Kent. We believe that music is important not just to enrich our church services, but for our individual general well-being.

Our regular rehearsals for our junior choir will be on Monday evenings, 5.00–6.00pm with plenty of opportunities to sing with our main choir at Sunday morning services.

Our Director of Music, Stephen Barker, has over 20 years experience of working with choirs and is also a qualified music teacher.  All of our adults who work directly with young people have an enhanced DBS disclosure; we take safeguarding very seriously.

What could your son or daughter get from joining a choir?

Singing in a choir is a great way to develop as a musician – there’s lots of research about the positive effect that music has on the academic development of young people.  Amanda Spielman, head of ofsted, recently said that “mastering singing sets children up well for a musical future”, so singing in a choir may spark a greater musical interest and develop into learning to play a musical instrument.  Singing as part of a choir is also great for developing concentration and the sense of contributing to something as part of a team.  It’s also a great way to make friends who share similar interests!

if you have any more questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me by emailing choir@StStephensCanterbury.net

I look forward to meeting you and your son or daughter at our Open Morning on 17th February, or at any following Monday evening rehearsals.
